The Sentinel
The strange landscape of Craters of the Moon National Monument offers a rare sight of raw newly formed lava flows. New as in 2000+ years ago, which is new in a geological context. The lava flows look so fresh it is as if they were just formed days before. On one cinder butte lies a lone tree bend by the constant wind it has endured its entire life it looks on over the rugged landscape in which it was born and where years from now it will die, alone. This Sentinel watches over this great place of intrigue offering a unique perspective on being at the top of the world and yet all alone. I visited with this beautiful life-form for several hours and vowed I would return to visit it before one of us passed on to our next spiritual journey.
Puncuated with all the character that is this place, lava, cinder, majestic view of distant extinct volcano buttes, powerful yet beautiful sky and a lone sentinel steadfast in his gaze over the vastness. This is a rare, one of a kind photograph of this unique moment in time, a moment captured that has never been here before and will never be again.
